A photon generated inside the Sun’s core, can take over 10 million years to reach the surface.

This is because the majority of the core consists of protons and electrons (it is a giant electron proton soup). For a photon to escape this soup is tricky and time consuming.

By the time it does get past all the collisions, it can be up to 10 million years!
